Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 14 ounces Oreo cookies (crushed)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, and vanilla over medium heat until steaming (about 8 minutes). Avoid boiling.
  2. Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a bowl until thick and pale. Slowly add some hot milk mixture while whisking to temper the eggs. Pour back into the saucepan and stir continuously.
  3. Cook on medium-low heat until it reaches 180°F and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat.
  4. Strain custard through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl over an ice bath to cool completely. Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  5. Crush Oreos in a resealable bag, reserving about ¾ cup for mixing later.
  6. Churn chilled custard in your Cuisinart ice cream maker according to manufacturer instructions (about 20–25 minutes). Add reserved crushed Oreos during the last few minutes.
  7. Layer half the churned ice cream in an airtight container, sprinkle half of the remaining Oreo chunks on top, then repeat with remaining ingredients. Freeze for at least 2 hours before serving.
