Description

Yaki Onigiri, or grilled rice balls, are a delicious Japanese snack that perfectly balances a crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. These savory bites are simple to prepare and can easily be customized with various fillings, making them great for any occasion—whether as an appetizer, a light meal, or a quick snack. The rich flavor from the sesame oil and soy sauce marinade adds depth to each bite. Plus, they store well in the fridge, making them ideal for meal prep.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cup uncooked sushi rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons toasted black sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fruit juice (e.g., apple or grape juice)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Nori sheets (for wrapping)

Instructions

  1. Rinse sushi rice under cold water until clear. Cook rice with water in a rice cooker or pot.
  2. After cooking, mix in sesame seeds and sesame oil until well combined. Let cool slightly.
  3. Wet hands and shape about 1/2 cup of rice into triangular forms.
  4. Combine soy sauce, fruit juice, and sugar in a bowl; set aside.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium heat and grill onigiri until crispy on all sides (about 2-3 minutes per side).
  6. Brush one side with the soy sauce mixture; flip to caramelize for 10-15 seconds. Repeat on other sides.
  7. Sprinkle with additional toppings like furikake before serving.
